Children and adolescents learn drug-related behaviors from the modeling of their parents and important others in their culture. Studies of the children of drug addicts find that, even as preschooler’s, they are more likely than other children to be able to identify addictive drugs and are more likely to see drug use as a standard part of daily life. The children of parents who abuse drugs by frequently getting high or driving under the influence learn that these are tolerable behaviors, and, thus, are more likely to engage in them as well. Because drug related problems are more common among males than females, most of the adults modeling the inappropriate use of drugs are male. In turn, because children are more likely to learn from adults who are alike to themselves, male children and male adolescents may be more likely to learn these behaviors from the adults in their world than are female children and female adolescents. Thus, maladaptive patterns of drug use may be passed down through the males in a family through modeling.
