A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause disability that is not expected as part of normal development. A mental illness may be possibly caused by several factors such as genetics, environment, and chemical imbalances in the brain. It is called mental basically because usually, the illness does not involve much anatomical dysfunctions. Usually, the disorder involves a thinking that something is wrong when physically, it seemed as if nothing is wrong. The symptoms are more internal rather than external. People may think that it is normal for someone to be talking to himself for a while. However, when this symptom last longer, longer than a certain period and disrupts bodily functions, then a mental illness may be diagnosed.
Everyone has their abnormal persona. We all have that craziness within us. It is just a matter of how we deal with our differences and extremities that we are able to handle our craziness. Moreover, many ask if mental illnesses really do exist. The English-speaking world has not always used medical language to explain the behavior we now label as symptomatic of mental disorder. Illlustrations were sometimes framed in quite different terms, such as possession. What we now call mental illness was not always treated as a medical problem. Non-English-speaking nations in the West have had changes in their linguistic usage and their treatment of the mentally ill roughly parallel to Anglophone countries. Anthropological work in non-Western cultures suggests that there are many cases of behavior that psychiatry would categorize as symptomatic of mental disorder, which are not seen within their own cultures as signs of mental illness.
However, nowadays, it has been talked about that mental disorders are really existing mental conditions that may have caused trouble in a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the outcome of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience a break from their symptoms by actively joining in an individual treatment plan. In addition to medication treatment, psychosocial treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, peer support groups and other community services can also be components of a treatment plan and that assist with recovery. The availability of transportation, diet, exercise, sleep, friends and meaningful paid or volunteer activities contribute to overall health and wellness, including mental illness recovery.
Unfortunately, society may be responsible for one’s failure in recovering form a mental illness. When the person is treated inside a medical institution, he or she is given ample treatment and is treated as if they are normal. They are given proper care and attention so as to promote recovery. However, when they go out into the real world after some time, society, upon knowing their past, would most likely mock them and treat them differently. Society would look at them as someone who still has the mental disorder and consequently, it would make them feel worse and thus, could trigger an occurrence of the mental illness once again.
A person afflicted with a mental illness would feel less of himself. He would think that he I not valuable to live in this world given that he could not act properly anymore. However, support from family and friends would be a great help for the patient to view life differently and positively. Thus it is the role of the family to provide the patient with love and care so as to sustain his recovery.
The world wide web myspace, smoking, alcohol, T.V., you name it. People are addicted. It is human nature to be addicted. Do we choose our addictions or do they choose us? Is it in our genes? Who knows? But the fact our nation is addicted remains. National addiction to love. National addiction to the soap operas of other people’s lives. National addiction to the tragedies of the day we find on the ten o’clock news. When does it become an addiction? Today as a nation we face the ever growing fact of technological over-stimulation. With the bombardment of information inherent in the invention of the internet, the nation has become addicted to, what else, information. But that is human nature right? Even biblical nature. Ever since Eve ate that apple from the Tree of Knowledge, mankind has been hungry for more. We, as a nation, cannot get enough information! It runs our lives! Since we now have a host of information at our fingertips, we have come up with even more questions.
Of all the things to be dependent on, information seems to be one of the most positive. Our national addiction to technological brainfood may be making us evolve more quickly, or it may just be giving us tumors. Only time will tell. But in the meantime the world is definitely getting more and more interesting. But because this rain of information is still new in human history, it is at its age of infancy and we are still learning how to harness it well. We have a long long way to go before we are able to gather all of this information and use it to create world peace and harmony. But little pockets of goodness are beginning to pop up. It’s now easier to spread the word about problems that we face such as global warming, poverty, addiction. People are able to find out where to get help for problems when they need it. We are learning and adapting and beginning to control our national addiction. And someday it may stop being our addiction and just be used more as a tool. Or not.
We also face a national addiction to oil, which needs to change soon. The earth and human kind are both suffering greatly due to this addiction. We must, as a nation, come together to create alternative and efficient fuel systems. Once we break our absolute need for oil we will have less war, a cleaner planet, more air to breathe, and we will be able to enjoy our more useful national addiction to information much longer, due to our years on this earth being extended. Oil has to be one of the most negative national addictions we can have. It sucks the life out of the earth, it’s messy, it’s toxic, it causes war, greed and corruption. The only thing good about it is that it let’s us drive to grandma’s house. Other than that, it’s lame. Let’s come up with an alternative. Something that will help our garden grow and create jobs. Come on people! Let’s put together a twelve step for that one.

Most people who find themselves addicted to unsafe substances or activities simply connect themselves with other individuals that have those same problems, that will make it tough to attempt to advise these people in a helpful way.
What you can do would be to confide in someone, who is not an addict, concerning the potential decisions you must make. You can tell your father and mother, a close buddy or even a minister and make them listen to your story. Somehow, with other people’s support, they will assist you to the right path. You also must find a reason to quit, since many addicts just coast through life with no regard for anything more.
